Day 22 of Black History Month
In North Texas, this Black woman is spreading some Black Girl magic. The Black Girl Magic Museum, a new pop-up museum honoring Black women and their contributions to society, is getting ready to open in Dallas. Dominique Hamilton, the founder and creator of the Black Girl Magic Museum, reportedly intends to increase representation in the region by developing the place to highlight the contributions Black women have made.
“Black women have so much impact, so much history and culture,” Hamilton said. “I wanted to be the change I wanted to see, so my goal was to dismantle the negative stereotypes that society had when it comes to Black women and girls,” Hamilton said.

The museum’s 21 interactive displays will highlight famous Black women from the past and present who have significantly impacted society and their communities. Also, there will be exhibitions on Black dance, Science, and business, as well as mental health activities for visitors all across the museum.
“I saw in Dallas, Texas there wasn’t a lot of representation and I saw our girls looking for something of their own,” Hamilton said. “So I wanted to create that, so that we know that we belong and we’re important and powerful.”

The Southwest Center Mall in Dallas is home to Hamilton’s temporary museum, which she thinks is the ideal setting for Black girls to see the range of opportunities available to them. The first weekend in March will see the opening of the Black Girl Magic Museum’s Dallas exhibitions. The museum will remain open for three years while adding new exhibits on occasion. – Steve Sijenyi
