BLACK WINERY OWNERS SET PACE FOR WOMEN, IN ATTEMPT TO INCREASE DIVERSITY IN THE WINE BUSINESS

Johnson and Matthews are attempting to educate folks who don't believe they have a path into the business, even though one of their goals is to draw attention to the Maryland-grown grapes used in their exceptional wines.

Day 21 of Black History Month

These Black women are attempting to increase diversity in the wine business. Wine aficionados Kimberly Johnson and Denise Matthews have been operating their old-world, traditional vintner Philosophy Winery for five years, contributing to the industry’s expanding culture. The two started Philosophy Winery in 2018, becoming Maryland’s first Black- and woman-owned winery, according to Barron’s.

“In the U.S., there are fewer than 1% of African-Americans in this industry. We’re setting the pace here for others to follow. We’re sending a message that there’s an opportunity that’s open to everyone. We’re breaking down barriers,” Matthews, 57, said.

“Even though we are identified as African-American, we don’t want to be known just for that,” Johnson, 45, said. “We want to be known for making quality wines that can withstand time, age gracefully, and will be sold and shared both inside and outside of Maryland.”

According to Matthews, the winery uses American methods while adhering to a French or Italian production approach. While the red wines at Philosophy Winery are matured in six French oak barrels, the white wines are fermented in stainless steel tanks. Starting with a single Rosé, Johnson and Matthews’ winery has grown to include five varieties, including its Rosé, Cabernet Franc, and Viognier wines, which have won awards. – Steve Sijenyi
