Day 17 of Black History Month
The Black Pages, a directory that Courtney Wade established to make it simpler to locate nearby Black-owned businesses, is bringing the neighborhood together. Wade was inspired to establish the directory as a result of the murder of George Floyd in May 2020, according to Daily Journal.
“The community was in arrest, but they were looking for something and wanted to come together,” she said regarding the incident.

Wade saw the community’s needs and, along with relatives and other activists, created a celebration to honor the Black community as part of Juneteenth. She first thought of the directory as a method to bring together the neighborhood and small businesses. More than 70 local companies and organizations are included in The Black Pages. Every six months or so, the directory is updated by a nearby printer. Wade has gained participation from several companies outside of Kankakee County, despite the fact that the county is the directory’s major emphasis.
“Overall, my focus and main job — besides my family — is bridging the gaps in the community,” Wade said. “Merging the needs of the community with the resources of the community.”

This year, Wade and her staff are trying to maintain the directory’s development and expansion. Facebook and The Black Pages’ website will also offer access to the directory. Businesses may contact them through email to submit information for directory inclusion, which costs $10.- Steve Sijenyi
