Day 20 of Black History Month
According to reports, Brittney Griner, the American women’s basketball player who spent over ten months in a Russian prison last year, has agreed to a one-year Women’s NBA contract with the Phoenix Mercury.

Griner declared her intention to resume her WNBA career after being freed in a prisoner swap in December. A small amount of cannabis oil was discovered in Griner’s suitcase last February, prompting allegations of narcotics smuggling against the 32-year-old center who helped the US women win Olympic gold in Tokyo and Rio. Her confinement, which US authorities believed to be unlawful imprisonment, became a significant global issue.
Although the star guard Diana Taurasi revealed on Saturday that she will be returning to Phoenix for her 19th career WNBA season, the Mercury have not yet acknowledged the signing of Griner. Griner’s final game for the Mercury came in 2021, when she assisted Phoenix in reaching the WNBA Final, which Chicago ultimately won. – Steve Sijenyi
