D.C. POLICE SERGEANT CHARGED WITH MURDER OF AN’TWAN GILMORE, A BLACK MAN WHO WAS SLEEPING IN HIS CAR

The charges claim Jervis violated Gilmore’s civil rights by “willfully depriving” him of “his right to be free from the use of excessive force.” If convicted, Jervis faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.

An’Twan Gilmore’s family is now getting justice. According to CBS News, the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C.’s Sergeant Enis Jevric will be charged with federal homicide for Gilmore’s passing. He is also accused of violating federal civil rights laws.

Police got reports in 2021 of a man sleeping in his car or being unresponsive at the wheel of a black BMW that was stopped at a stop sign. A pistol was allegedly discovered hidden in the man’s waistline when one officer approached the car just before three in the morning. A short while later, when a couple of policemen wearing bulletproof gear got a closer look, backup was summoned. Officers can be seen tapping on the glass on bodycam video before the car moves and then stops again. Officers yelled, “Don’t move!” as the car began to move once again. At that point, cops opened fire with nearly nine shots. Gilmore was declared dead in the hospital. Matthew Graves, the D.C. U.S. Attorney, deemed this a serious safety violation.

“When an officer willfully disregards the safety of a citizen he is sworn to protect, he violates the trust placed in him by virtue of his badge,” Graves said.

Jevric has reportedly been on paid administrative leave ever since the event, but on Tuesday he entered a not guilty plea and was granted freedom on personal recognizance. According to Metropolitan Police, they actively pursued this inquiry and are anticipating the results.
