Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has officially signed another bill governing the bodies of women. After first being considered back in early March, DeSantis has now given his approval on legislation that requires incest and rape victims to show proof of their trauma in order to get an abortion.
Last year, Florida introduced a bill banning abortions after 15 weeks, following the historic overturning of Roe v. Wade; the right to an abortion. A year later, the Republican governor signed the Heartbeat Protection Act into law, which bans abortions after six weeks, and also requires victims of human trafficking, incest and rape to provide proof for any exception from the ban. The only acceptable documentation includes medical evidence, police reports and/or restraining orders. It is reported that the exceptions would also end at 15 weeks of pregnancy.
Furthermore, the new six-week ban will not go into effect until Florida’s Supreme Court overturns its previous laws on abortion. However, once it does take effect, it will make Florida one of the most restrictive states in regards to undergoing an abortion. – Steve Sijeyi
