Michael Valva, a disgraced former NYPD cop, was convicted guilty of killing his autistic son by freezing him to death and was given a 25-year prison term. A Suffolk County court handed down the maximum punishment to Valva after he was found guilty of second-degree murder last month. The 8-year-old Thomas was reportedly trapped in an overheated garage overnight at their Long Island home, according to the New York Post.

Thomas apparently spent more than 16 hours without any protection from the cold and eventually passed away from hypothermia. Thomas’ body temperature at the time of his death was 76.1 degrees, which was 20 degrees below normal, according to the prosecution. Anthony, the boy’s elder brother, who was 10 at the time and was also thought to be autistic, eventually made it through the same procedure. The father told emergency workers that he found his kid unresponsive after the boy was dead on a door frame, but an EMS worker who went to the site testified during Valva’s trial that the father had “no emotion, no sense of care” for the boy. According to News 12, teachers allegedly testified and characterized the youngster as being mistreated, undernourished, and frequently cold and hungry. According to a special education instructor, Anthony, Thomas’ sibling, would look for “any crumb of food” at all times. He was consuming food from the ground beneath the stands.

In January 2020, Valva and his then-fiancée Angela Pollina were taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder and four charges of endangering the welfare of a child. Pollina will face a separate trial. A special education teacher who kept a “well-being log” of her children made a note of minor injuries on his face and a limp gait. Valve’s defense said that the former officer was extremely stressed up because of his financial circumstances and because of Pollina’s wrath against him after both boys urinated and defecated inside the house. Prosecutors claimed that although Thomas’ older brother, Edward, claimed he was permitted to use the restroom at school, due to incontinence problems, both he and his brother were compelled to wear diapers and even had urine-soaked clothing and shoes. Both of the younger boys were reportedly losing weight, with Anthony losing 20 pounds in a year, according to earlier witnesses. – Steve Sijenyi
