A couple in Grovetown, Georgia conned a Walmart cashier into handing them products and gift cards for $6,400. On November 30, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, a man and a woman entered the Walmart near Interstate 20 and Lewiston Road and selected a number of pricey things before heading to the register to pay.

The cashier bought pricey items and gift cards for the couple over their several transactions. In order for their credit card to function correctly, the couple allegedly asked the Walmart cashier to press the cash button on the register, which baffled her. The trick prevented the register from debiting the credit card. According to deputies, the couple also requested that the clerk swipe their credit card using the “cash” button on the register. As a result, the credit card was finally not charged. This enabled the register to ring up the sale as though cash was being paid. The pair allegedly received $3,400 in free items as well as $3,000 in gift cards. The couple’s use of both cash and a credit card was described by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office as “theft by deceit.”
On December 8, the male suspect was revealed to be Flint, Michigan native Jaylan Griggs, age 19. The unnamed female suspect is still being sought for by the authorities. After a man attempted to steal a cart full of bananas worth $40 from the store in April, the Grovetown Walmart also made headlines. Security was able to prevent the guy from fleeing the store with 125 bananas packed inside his cart. – Steve Sijenyi
