ODELL BECKHAM JR. SUES NIKE CLAIMING THE COMPANY OWES HIM MORE THAN $20 MILLION

Beckham claimed that Nike made the equipment sanctions so that he would sign a less lucrative contract with the brand.

Odell Beckham Jr. has filed a lawsuit against Nike, claiming that the company deliberately lowered sales to avoid extending his contract. According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Beckham alleged that Nike made a move to keep the professional athlete on its celebrity roster, which was within the brand’s rights, after he was approached by Adidas toward the end of his contract in 2017.

According to the lawsuit, despite Nike’s agreement to match Adidas’ offer, the company changed the contract’s fine print, breaking the original agreement and costing him approximately $20 million. The NFL star claimed that Nike’s deal restructuring made it unlikely that the contract would result in a valuable extension. In March 2022, Beckham claimed that Nike owed him approximately $2.6 million, but that the company withheld more than $2 million without warning. Beckham later found out that Nike issued a statement regarding the alleged violations and accused the athlete of violating shoe and glove commitments when he changed his equipment at the end of the season. He claimed that he was forced to change his cleats because Nike refused to send him updated versions that reflected the colors of his new team. He denied breaking any equipment commitments.

Beckham stated that he always customizes his gloves to meet his “high fashion brand” standards, and that Nike never had a problem with him doing so prior to 2022. Beckham claimed that Nike made the equipment sanctions so that he would sign a less lucrative contract with the brand.
