PATRICK MAHOMES, JALEN HURTS MAKE HISTORY AS FIRST TWO OPPOSING BLACK STARTING QUARTERBACKS IN SUPER BOWL

Mahomes, who is the only black quarterback to have won the Vince Lombardi Trophy more than once, is aiming to become the third. Hurts would become the fourth black quarterback to win the Super Bowl if he were to prevail.

The Super Bowl LVII will be played on February 12 in Glendale, Arizona. When the game begins, the opposing quarterbacks, Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs and Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles, will both be Black for the first time in NFL history.

One of two milestones may occur after the game is done, according to CNN. Mahomes, who is the only Black quarterback to have won the Vince Lombardi Trophy more than once, is aiming to become the third. Hurts would become the fourth Black quarterback to win the Super Bowl if he were to prevail. The 1988 Washington Redskins 42-10 victory over the Denver Broncos was credited to quarterback Doug Williams, according to Sportscasting‘s report from the previous year. He created history by being the first Black quarterback to win the NFL title after 21 Super Bowls had been played.

In 2014, the second year of his NFL career, current Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson became the second Black man to lead his club to a Super Bowl triumph, more than 25 years after that accomplishment. Wilson, a Seattle Seahawks player at the time, coincidentally defeated the Denver Broncos. The Broncos hold the distinction of being the first team to lose in the Super Bowl to two Black quarterbacks. Additionally, the Seahawks’ 43-8 victory over them was a resounding victory.

When the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 in 2020, Mahomes became the third Black quarterback to win the title. He holds the distinction of becoming the Super Bowl’s youngest quarterback, having done it at the age of 24. – Steve Sijenyi
