WizKid will be the second Nigerian musician to ever perform as the headlining act at Madison Square Garden. The Afrobeats superstar will grace the venue in November 2022.
About a year has passed since he performed to a sold-out crowd during a three-night stint at London’s O2 Arena.
Since last fall, Wizkid has maintained a busy tour schedule, travelling to several countries thanks to the popularity of his fourth studio album Made in Lagos in 2020 and the deluxe edition released the following year. Wizkid, also known as Starboy, Daddy Yo or Big Wizz is one of if not the most popular musician in Africa today.
WHAT IS AFROBEATS?
Popular African music style afrobeats combines modern Ghanaian and Nigerian mainstream music with 21st-century Western rap elements.
It’s important to distinguish between the terms Afrobeats and Afrobeat (with a “s”). Afrobeat is a subgenre of Nigerian music that dates back to the legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti. It is distinguished from other subgenres by combining highlife and juju music with funk and jazz beats.
Although the Afrobeats genre has been expanding since the early 1990s, its global music scene debut was in 2016. Afrobeats rhythms and African artists have now been infused into the music of various American artists, including Ed Sheeran, French Montana, Tory Lanez, Chris Brown and Doja Cat and more.
