She initially denied the allegations, but she eventually posted an apology video in which she promised not to eat bats again
A Thai woman was detained earlier this month after uploading a sickening video to YouTube of herself enjoying a bowl of bat soup made from a protected species. According to the Daily Mail, Phonchanok Srisunaklua uploaded the video to her channel with the title “Gin Zap Bep Nua Nua,” which roughly translates to “eat spicy and delicious” in English. The shocking video, which lasts one minute and forty seconds, shows the woman sitting at a table in front of a dark soup with cherry tomatoes and several Lesser Asiatic yellow bats. After that, Srisunaklua, who is said to be a teacher, takes one of the dead bats and cuts it up before dipping the meat in a sauce called Nim Jam.
She reportedly told viewers in the viral video that it was her first time eating a bat and that she had purchased the protected species from a market in northern Thailand near the Laos border. She then gave the dish her approval, calling the soup “delicious” and comparing the texture to raw meat. The viral video “shocked” the head of the wildlife health management group at the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation, who noted that humans face serious health risks from eating bats.
Pattaraphon Manee-on elaborated, “Because the incident should not happen both in Thailand and around the world, it is very risky behavior, especially since bats have a lot of pathogens.” Manee-on went on to say that no amount of heat or preparation can actually make bats safe to eat, and that touching the wild animal’s saliva, blood, or skin is considered “a risk.”

According to the publication, Srisunaklua was eventually taken into custody shortly after the video went viral and was charged with “possession of protected wildlife carcasses” and “crimes violating the Computer Crimes Act.” She initially denied the allegations, but she eventually posted an apology video in which she promised not to eat bats again. According to the media, she now faces a $13,800 fine and a five-year prison term.
